Most of the present-day still cameras provide high definition (HD) images, but the quality of the videos is of mediocre video quality. On the other hand, HD video camcorders are expensive with cumbersome tape-based recording and still image quality. Their processing speed lags far behind traditional digital still cameras. Hong Kong-based Ambarella offers automotive solutions designed for human and computer vision, combining high-resolution imaging and neural network processing into a single, low-power embedded A1 platform that is based on the next generation of video compression technology—H.264/AVC video compression. Ambarella’s patent-pending platform delivers a 2.5 times compression gain over current MPEG- 2/4 solutions, providing the efficiency required to store HD video content in convenient flash-based memory.
“When we started the company in 2004, we sought to deliver the highest quality HD experience at the most competitive price-point for our customers,” states Fermi Wang, CEO of Ambarella. “With our deep algorithm, VLSI and system expertise and patent-pending technology, Ambarella is providing customers and ultimately consumers with true HD hybrid digital cameras at a price that will drive market adoption.” From drones to robots, from taxis to long-haul semi-trucks, Ambarella’s vision processors revolutionize driving.
Founded in 2004, Ambarella has leveraged the management team’s extensive background in designing low-power System-on-Chips (SoCs) that enable intelligent cameras to extract valuable data from high-resolution video streams. The SoCs offer high-resolution video compression, advanced image processing, and powerful deep neural network processing.
Ambarella provides edge solutions with low latency, high efficiency and exceptional performance, including front advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) cameras, smart electronic mirrors, and drive recorders. Positioned behind the rear view mirror, the forward-facing ADAS camera enables drivers to easily handle functions such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning (LDW), forward collision warning (FCW), among others. On the other hand, Ambarella’s driver monitoring systems (DMS) solution processes clients interior-sensing algorithms at high speeds and with low power consumption, even at night (via onboard RGB-IR processing) that results in exceptional driving performance. Ambarella’s DMS solution can also be integrated with complementary camera applications, including electronic mirror, front-camera ADAS, high-resolution recording for better driving efficiency.
In addition, Ambarella’s rear view and side-view electronic mirror solutions enhance the visibility of traffic, filter out distracting glare and LED flickering from headlights, and offer intelligent safety features such as blindspot monitoring and overtaking vehicle detection with ultra-low latency. To further enhance driving experiences, Ambarella’s 360-degree surround view solution uses multiple cameras to present a single, unified image of the vehicle from a top-down, bird’s eye view. With intelligent parking assist features as well as recording and streaming capabilities, Ambarella’s four-channel surround view systems assist drivers with unobstructed, distortion-free views of the vehicle from every side.
Ambarella’s automotive processors are engineered with a combination of pioneering research in environmental perception and the latest advances in deep neural network (DNN) performance. Ambarella empowers OEMs and Tier-1 providers of intelligent driving solutions to improve vehicle safety, delivering exceptional perception capability and image quality in low-light or high-contrast environments, advanced computer vision processing at full 4K (8Mp) resolution for superior image recognition, long- and short-range stereovision capabilities, recording functionality, low-bitrate streaming.
Ambarella strives to continue defining a new class of digital cameras that bring consumers unmatched HD video and digital still together in one device, in the near future. The company is planning to add new functionalities in the existing A1 platform to deliver A1 services.
